Great Videos

I came across some really good videos recently that I thought I would share with everyone.

The first video is the new 2011 SCCA Solo Nationals music video by Speedway Motors. Every year they come out with a new music video with great footage of Solo Nationals. This year's was interesting, as it had some neat effects and two decent songs mashed together, but last year's video still sits on top in my mind. I definitely liked the buildup aspect of the music in the video though, as it sort of gave me the "fight for the title" feeling near the end. I also really liked how they included the announcer saying "Hold on to that top spot because it is easier to chase then it is to lead!"

2010 SCCA National Solo Video

Just wanted to share with my viewers this awesome YouTube video I came across. It's a video montage put together by Speedway Motors and covers the 2010 SCCA Nationals event. I really enjoyed the shots they put in, good music, and the overall quality is excellent. Check it out and put the volume up, definitely gets you in the mood to pick up the helmet and go race!

Knightsports 2010 Catalog

Attached here on this post is the Knightsports catalog for 2010. Be sure you have Flash so you can see it properly. Kind of cool that they have it online now so I don't have to scan all the pages like I did for last year. Looks like great stuff as usual, not too many additions. Keeping it simple as usual.

B Stock RX-8 Champ In STX

The December issue of Sportscar Magazine featured a great cover on Jason Isley trying out STX this year. He has won B Stock in his RX8 a few times from my understanding, and wanted to try something different. Due to copyright issues, I can't scan the magazine and host the article, but I'm sure I can at least discuss it! I wanted to post my opinions on his setup that I found to be interesting, as well as what he did run for STX this year. So that is it! 8 weeks to build and test out that car for Nationals. Jason came 2nd place in STX and his wife came 1st in STXL. There are some modifications that had me raise my brow in question to be honest. For starters, what strut bar did he run, as they did not mention anything about a strut bar being upgraded from stock. Secondly, no BHR ignition upgrade from the poorly made stock ignition coils? Even if he was planing to go back to B Stock from the beginning, after spending that much on some of the other mods, I personally would have also bought the best ignition kit out there. I had thought that STX allowed you to change clutch and flywheel, or at least rear diff but I guess not as I was told.

Another one that has me puzzled is his alignment, as well as running without a rear swaybar. That really surprised me. No rear swaybar would cause the rear end to be pretty easy to kick out if I'm not mistaken, unless somehow his spring setup makes up for it? The alignment of running such a high camber, especially in the rear surprised me. I was always told not to go so high on rear camber to ensure all my power is being put down. Granted he is running 265, and I'm currently running 245, but could that width really make up that sort of difference? -3 in the front I suppose I could see. The toe setup is very close, if not identical to mine so that made me feel good.

I guess another is the pulleys. That has been going up and down on the forums as some see it useful, and others see it as useless. I've heard it can cause cooling issues due to under driving the water pump, but I've also heard that people have claimed a 10HP increase. The battery was a good tip as I've been looking for a replacement battery for next year, so I'll have to look into the one they chose and see how good it is compared to another stock battery.

Some people had questioned the cat, and why he didn't go for a 100 CPI cat. I'm not too familiar with catalytic converters, except that we need high quality metal ones. Also, one racing seat as opposed to two?

A lot of little intricacies with the setup, but then again, I'm no RX-8 guru. I've learned whatever I do know through a lot of forum surfing, autocrossing, and breaking things on my own car. I hope this post can enlighten people as it has me, and give people some ideas about various setups. I know I can't wait to try out some setup ideas I've come up with in the past, as well as because of this article.

RX-8 - Jack Yamaguchi

This book is a resource that is overflowing with information for all RX8 enthusiasts. I had received this book for my birthday back in May, and I was originally going to review this for that month, but I wanted to make sure I covered everything before reviewing it.

For any RX8 owner, this book is very essential to fully understand all the fundamentals and capabilities of the RX8. It covers everything from many driver impressions, to history, design, testing, structure, and just about every detail about the car. There is some information you find in here that you won’t find on a forum message board unless you dig really deep. I highly recommend reading or owning this to anyone who is an RX8 owner, or at least interested in the RX8.

Big thanks to josh for getting me this awesome resource for my birthday, can’t thank you enough for how awesome this is, both to have and the chance to review it!

Chasing The Touge

Very sorry viewers for the late review! I got caught up getting ready for Autocross and everything else that this had to be pushed aside. That being said, I'll be reviewing the classic, "Chasing the Touge"

Chasing the Touge was pretty good, but not something I'd watch as frequently as a Best Motoring or Hot Version. Many segments within it were mostly informational videos on some teams out in California, and the popular racing events they have going on. Some good footage of what cars were hot back in 2003, and great to hear what some of the teams have to say about how they got started, but all in all it was a documentary and not necessarily a "race video" like Hot Version.

Usually when I watch race videos, I like to see and get ideas from other tuners with what they've done to their car and what they do with their car. With this, it was more of seeing how the teams started and have progressed through the years, and what they do for fun and practice. Decent to buy for your collection, but not on the top of the list.

Knight Sports Catalog 2009

This Month I'll be reviewing a product catalog from Knight Sports instead of reviewing a movie. Wanted to do something a little different this time, and I had just recently picked this up. For starters, this is almost like looking at a adult magazine for car enthusiasts.

High quality pictures, great paper quality, and excellent explanations of all their products (at least the ones I can read in english). Knight Sports is a well known tuning company from Japan that has been around since 1971. They make quality parts that are highly respected, but at a cost of course. In my opinion, I think they have one of best RX8 line ups around, but for RX7s, I'm still a Fujita Engineering kind of guy, especially for their GT kit.

Many of the parts here are very well engineered and well thought out. Take the header for the RX8 as an example. Of all the headers I have seen, this header is the only one that splits the middle runner into two (it explains with diagrams in the catalog). Very cool stuff and definitely worth a download.

Feel free to grab the catalog here, scanned in high res PDF. (Thanks to Altspace for hosting!)

JDM OPTION International - Midnight 200MPH Blast!

Do YOU know who Smokey Nagata is? That was the phrase of the week after seeing this classic DVD. A slight change from the usual Best Motoring International videos, but still a coverage of what is going on in Japan. This video is mostly focused towards a “Legendary Street Racer” named Smokey Nagata who is the owner of a tuning firm in Japan known as “TOP SECRET”.
TOP SECRET is known for their all “bling bling gold” color cars with insane numbers of horsepower.

The video shows sections of him doing very high speed racing, ranging from the Japanese Wangan Expressway, to the highways New Zealand and more. Smokey is known for his “Big Burnout” before doing a “200 MPH Burst”, as they call it. Corny video, with some great mysterious music to help keep the “Legendary Street Racer” theme going. But never-the-less, a good watch that I have seen a couple times already, especially because of the Wangan portion in the beginning.

Best Motoring International - Type R Legend

Calling all Honda enthusiasts...This is a must have. Regardless of the video's age (1998-1999), it is an excellent resource of information regarding the legendary type R line up from Honda. The video has various coverage from the NSX Type R, to the Civic Type R, and to the Integra Type R. Mr. Ichishima, president of SPOON (tuning company that exclusively tunes Honda vehicles) is featured in a full interview and explains his love for Hondas over other car manufacturers. It is great to see the timeline of Honda's flagship sports cars, along with the information regarding each one individually. Again, a must buy for any Honda enthusiast, or anyone who enjoys Honda sports cars of the 90's.

Best Motoring International - Drift Bible

Drift, Drift, Drift, and MORE Drift! If drifting is your thing, this movie is your bible (no pun intended). This is an oldie but one of my favorite videos I have. This video takes you into the art of drifting, not only what it is really about, but how you can use it in various ways, both on and off the track.

Keiichi Tsuchiya, the Drift King talks to you a little about his history in driving, and then goes straight into the basics. From there, he shows how weight balance is key. He also explains and displays various techniques you can try out, ranging from beginner to advanced. This is a very useful tool when deciding what kind of rear wheel drive car you want, and even offers advice on simple tuning you can do to your car to help you learn faster. Again, if you have any interest in drifting, then this is where to start.

Best Motoring International - Japan VS USA Drift Off

This month's Best Motoring was packed with a humorous drift battle, a great demonstration of the new M5's abilities, a bit on the Solstice, finishing off with some coverage of Orido's and Taniguchi's racing career. The DVD was not that bad at all, but did not have that eye catching media to it like the Civic Type R episode. It was a nice coverage of the M5, and the drift battle was very enjoyable (especially for NC Miata drivers), but again, not everything it could have been. This is more of a straight to the point video - Drift Battle - Circuit Race - Solstice in Action - then some commentary on the others.

If I were to have this on my list to get, I would only be getting it for the drift battle, seeing Ken Gushi and Rhys Millen, otherwise I wasn't really into this episode as I am most of the others.

Best Motoring International - Civic Type R Returns

Took me a bit to get to reviewing this, sorry about that everyone! Getting down to this video, this video is loaded with a boat load of information regarding Japan's new Honda Civic Type R that we will, unfortunately, never see in America. Granted, the closest we have is the four door Civic Si, but it's not just the same. They go into extensive explanation on the car as a whole, ranging from Chassis, to suspension work, custom tires and more. If you really wanted to, you could possibly convert a American Civic 4 door into a JDM one, and this video would certainly help you achieve that, but I'm not familiar with how far you could go. I really don't have a lot more to say, other then if you are a Honda guy, I recommend picking this video up just to see the great comparisons and new equipment on the Civic.

Thanks to Brendan for getting me this for my Birthday not long ago.

Hot Version - Rocket Rotary

This movie was hands down, one of the greatest videos done by the BMI/Hot Version crew. An owner of an RX-8 or not, this movie was great for showing the different views of the Japanese tuning firms. The segment regarding the RX-8 really showed the difference between a street tuned NA version and a street tuned turbo version, both getting great reviews. Again as I've said about most of the Touge Showdown episodes, this is a great way to get various ideas on different approaches on street tuning an RX-8.

I was really impressed by the Fujita Engineering exhaust note and tune overall, which sort of birthed my urge to tune my car and keep it NA. The product list of Fujita Engineering, as well as Knight Sports really appeal to me as opposed to the frequent frequent turbo tuning of the car. Sort of the "underdog" approach of things. Nevertheless, the movie was impressive and the battle afterwards to compare the tuned cars versing a lightly tuned RX-8 really gave me a good perspective on my goal with my car.

The last feature about Touge Showdown Max Final was great, showing off the impressive RE-Amemiya RX-7. Granted, good as always, but the whole section about the various tuned RX-8s took the cake for me.

Initial D Arcade Stage 4

After a poor mood during the morning, I decided to pack up, and head on over to Tokyo Game Action to play some Wangan Midnight. Upon arriving, oddly enough... I decided to try Initial D 4. Let me tell you a little bit about this little gem that very few arcades have in America, and my feelings towards it.

For starters, you get a plastic card that is just like a credit card, that holds all the information of your character and cars. On the top, it shows the touge passes you have beaten, and shows your characters face. The card also holds up to 3 cars at once...Not bad if you get bored of one car.

Once you make a card, choose your car and start racing, you have to play either story mode, time attack, or in-store battle. Time attack is self explanatory, in-store battle is to battle someone next to you, and story mode is where you go through the touge courses 1 by 1, following a similar story to Initial D's main character, Takumi; except you are yourself. When you beat a racer, you earn battle points that you can use to purchase parts for your car.

It can be really fun at times, especially the dynamic tuning of the cars, ranging from tons of name brand body kits and wheels, to various levels of tuning of the engine, suspension, etc. What is NOT cool, is to get to tune your car, you have to quit after each turn. Every 3rd quit, you can visit the customize shop to edit settings on your vehicle. Every 5th quit, you can get a random dress up item for your driver. Just gets annoying, quitting after each race, pulling out your card, then putting in money, and doing it again.

My main dislike about this game is the physics. At first, they felt decent, the car felt grippy, extra fast but grippy. But then there are these turns that if you go in too fast, or at an awkward angle... Your rear literally kicks out completely, and you slide into the wall, then ALONG the wall..and you can't get out. Once your car slides off the wall, you are in second gear going about 30MPH. If you brake hard, you make up for it, but still, it gets really aggervating when you're doing good, and suddenly you go sideways and your car becomes a magnet to the wall.

All in all, it's a fun-terrible game. Fun because of the up to date selection of cars, the in depth tuning - especially the name brands from Japan, and the touge courses. Bad, because the terrible physics, computer cars pushing you aside and/or driving through you if you're in the way, and again, the ice skating physics. Apparently they are beta testing Stage 5 in japan now, and from what I hear, it gets rid of that lame slide and fixes a lot of things. We can only hope for a better game!

Hot Version - Tuner Battle Royale

BIG BATTLE~! Is what comes to mind every time I think of this great video. Not much to really say other then it was all great battles. Apparently every year they have a large event in Japan in which there is a battle between NA cars and turbo cars. Touge Showdown was excellent, with a RX-8 from Fujita Engineering that battled the Amuse S2000 for the Touge Monster title. Top it off, bonus battle between Orido's Supra, a RX-7 and a Evolution from BOSS.

All in all, not bad, good movie to add to the collection, and good if you just want see the various races.

Best Motoring International - New STI - Fast On 4

A Best Motoring focused on the new body Subaru STI, displaying it's amazing new chassis as well as performance in various conditions. Subaru admits that the STI is actually the rival of the BMW M3 and not necessarily the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. In the various tests, I was actually pretty impressed with the changes. Sometimes you always hear about a newer version of a car, but it being heavier with more safety equipment, and sometimes even less sporty, but not the case here.

After the segment featuring the STI, they had a great Miata segment, displaying various tests on Tsukuba Circuit. Wasn't that bad, I'm just amazed in the differences between the top of the line package Miata in Japan as opposed to the top of the line package in America (IE: America comes with Billistein shocks, better tires, etc. Japan, from what I've heard, those are optional).

All in all, not that bad of a movie, especially if you're considering purchasing a new NC Miata or a new STI.

Best Motoring International - Racing Bonanza

Of the Best Motorings I have reviewed so far, I would say I like this one the least. There really was no particular car focus here, or even a Touge Showdown, as it all was really scattered and different segments. The exotic car run wasn't that bad, as well as the "Hot Hatch" battle, but really, the only thing I found amusing was the "JDM FR Face Off". Featured the Sports Prestige Limited RX-8 (Shinka in US) and a Mazdaspeed RX-8 ver. 2. Great battle, and showed the great overall balance of the RX-8's while other cars experienced brake fading, or other conditions. Watching this episode really made me wish I had a Sports Prestige instead of a normal RX-8, but I suppose at somepoint with all the tuning I have in mind, mine will surpass that and more.

Again, not a Best Motoring I'd really recommend unless you're interested in the luxury car segment, or others. The JDM face off was good, but not worth the whole DVD.

Wangan Midnight - Maximum Tune Series

I have been playing the Wangan Midnight - Maximum Tune series since Version 1, so I figure now would be a good time as any to review this latest version.

The game in general is a racing game based on an anime story that takes place mostly on the metropolitan highway in Japan, known as the Wangan (these highway battles are also known as Shutokou Battle). You have a neat, full 6 speed gear box shifter, with a leather wrapped steering wheel, racing bucket seat with a cushion, and overall great music to get you going. You purchase a magnetic card from the machine to save all your data on for that car.

Main features about the game is the tuning that is involved. When you play in story mode, you get the tuning bars that allow you to tune either the handling, or power of your car. After completeing the first quarter of the story (20 races), you will start to tune your car points differently. After a while, you can begin to distrubite the earned points into your car, where you desire before a race. Example, if you are going onto a route that has a lot of turns, you can choose if you want more handling and less horsepower. Or if you know there will be a lot of straights, you can choose more power, less handling. To me, that adds a sort of strategic approach, and always make the outcome different.

Has all name brand cars, both old and new ones, along with various body kits, wheels, and other goodies you can add externally by competeing in ghost mode. Ghost mode is where you battle another players ghost that he has left on one of the 4 linked machines. It is as if you are battling the player, only he is on a set line that he ran, last ghost run he did. From there, you earn dress up points to bling out your car.

The game features all the other usuals, time attack mode, battling, and outrun mode in which you simply have to pass 10 cars in a row, one at a time. The physics in my opinion are just right. It's easy to pull off a drift, but the real skill lies in timing your turn and controlling it. Smoothness is what is needed to play well in this game, not just speed. The graphics are great, but I personally feel that Version 2 had a bit of better graphics.

All in all, this is a great arcade game that has some epic 4 player battles, great ghost mode to challenge players while they're not actually there, and just tuning the cars and drifting on the highway in the game in general.

If anyone plays that is in the New England area, feel free to let me know and maybe we can go to Tokyo Game Action or FunWorld sometime and play.

Best Motoring International - Evo IX - The Next Evolution

This Best Motoring has no real "main topic", unlike the previous DVDs I have reviewed so far. The DVD started off with a great track battle on the new Fuji Speedway. Pretty good, not that bad, but was really nice to see the design of the new track and see the racers going through and looking at the new setup, talking about how to approach the turns and go through everything.

They had a time attack of the new Ford GT, but I was mostly interested in the next part, all about the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX. Once again, their overviews of new cars never fail to impress me. I really enjoyed the comparison to the old Evolution, before taking it onto the track and testing it against the other cars they have.

Top it off, they had great time attacks of the new Impreza S203 STI, Carerra S review, and then a time attack of the Nismo Tuned Skyline GT-R 34.

Good video for anyone that is interested in getting a Lancer Evolution, or at least curious of the differences between the VIII and the IX.

Gran Turismo 5: Prolouge

Picked up a copy of Gran Turismo 5: Prolouge the other day and wanted to give my two cents on the game. Been playing it just about every night with Oleg and my younger cousin. Bottom line? It's a good game - for a while.

Sadly, there is only so much you can do before it gets old. 6 (or 8? I forget) tracks only, with certain events that you have to use certain cars for or you'll just never win...But to get those cars you have to redo old events to build up money, 20 times in a row, which becomes old. Some of the events as well, you can literally only do if you're either a pro at the controller (no mistakes...ever) or you have the ultra accurate GT steering wheel. So career mode really has it's ups and downs. Some are fun, some are hard fun, and some are just stupid to bother trying (aggervating too).

Graphics? Out of this world. Bought an RX-8 and on the idle screens when waiting to choose what mode you want to play, it looks real. Not just amazing, or really cool, it looks REAL (playing on a 42' 1080P HDTV). But insane graphics can't make a game, and I think we all know that.

Physics? They are as real as always, but with a simulation mode (arcade "real" like) and a professional mode (real as it gets). Simulation mode really helps in tights spots and when learning the game. It's a lot harder to spin out, or mess up in general. Professional mode, slightest thing you do wrong, you're going to pay and pay hard. A lot of time and patience if you really want to play in that mode.

Online Play? Garbage. Enough said. Every room almost ALWAYS lags. People will fly through you, crash into a wall, then teleport way ahead of you like nothing, then crash into you, and send you flying while they still drive... At the start of the race by the way. That became old, very fast.

The cars? As always the cars are amazing. Even though you only get something like 60 cars, some tuned for you and some not, it just still doesn't cut it. Not the selection department, but the fact you cannot tune any of them. Now, you can "quick tune" (unlocked when you get to S rank in career mode) and lower the cars weight, change dampening, gear ratios, increase power, etc. Thats great...But it's NOT Gran Turismo! I miss blowing money on insane exhausts, getting wheels that match my car, lowering the car and actually seeing it lowered, etc. Now granted, I understand this is like a "demo" of GT5, but they could have at least had a few wheels and some settings ALONG with quick tune, don't you agree?

All in all, the game is a solid GOOD. You can play with some REAL looking cars with SOME decent events on some nice, but few tracks. If you're big into online play (like me) then wait for the real deal, because this lacks heavily.
